HVAC: What You Should Know Before You Begin

TIP! Be aware of the type of system that is installed in your home prior to calling a contractor to fix it. Find out the brand and model and, if possible, dig out the maintenance history.

Your home can remain comfortable when your HVAC system is properly working. The heat in the winter and cool air in the summer are very refreshing to come home to. However, it can turn into something you don’t want to deal with when things start to fail in an HVAC system. You must learn proper maintenance for these systems; the article below can help with that.

TIP! Help the outside condenser fan run efficiently by cleaning the coils and fan blades before the summer starts. Prior to working on or cleaning the unit, be sure to turn off the power.

Always make sure you are up-to-date about your HVAC unit. Write down the make, model, and any maintenance history. This information will be helpful to any contractor you hire to repair it.

TIP! Clean your outdoor condensers often. Leaves and debris can accumulate quickly, particularly following storms, and that can cause problems for your system.

If you’ve been having trouble with an HVAC system, look around your home before calling in people to help. Figure out which rooms are too cool or warm. The contractor can probably figure out and fix the problem easier.

TIP! When you are cutting the grass, be sure not to cover your outdoor units with clippings. Aim the grass clippings in the other direction.

Don’t hire a contractor until you know a little about what you are facing. It is going to be hard to get a price estimate on the phone if the current system isn’t something they’ve seen. They also won’t be able to offer you a quote if they don’t have a detailed idea of what you want done. This is information that you should have prepared in advance.

TIP! Many homeowners forget to oil their condenser at least once per year, but it is required. You’ll see that the ports here are closed with a rubber or metal cap.

Clean the fan blades and coils on the condenser fan every spring. First, make sure the power is off to ensure nothing moves while you are working. Secondly, pop the grill off, take the blades off and clean them as well as the actual unit.

TIP! A shady spot is always a good choice for the placement of your outdoor compressor. The unit will operate more efficiently to cool your home if the intake air is cooler to begin with.

You should now have a better idea about why proper HVAC system maintenance is necessary. If you neglect to care for it, you will increase the risk of it ceasing to work when you most need it to. That could bring about a very expensive repair bill. Luckily, this article should have given you tips to keep your HVAC working properly.
