College can be an exciting prospect but intimidating at the same time. Lots of people view it as an opportunity to gain deep intellectual knowledge while acquiring the skills they need to live on their own. It is not easy for a young person to learn the skills of adulthood while learning a field of study at the same time. But that is the challenge of college life.
Make a checklist of things to pack for college. You need to be prepared for school to avoid calling your parents for items weekly. When you have to travel far, you’ll find this is even more true.
Learn what you can about the career you want before you select your college. This will allow you to verify that the school you are looking at offers the classes you need to achieve your desired degree. If necessary, schedule an appointment with the director of admissions.
Your environment may make a difference in whether or not your studying is successful. Studying in your dorm isn’t usually feasible due to the noise and activity level. Instead, seek out a quite location where you can avoid potential interruptions. Going to the library is probably the best option. When all else fails, use headphones with noise-cancelling abilities.
Take at least one general ed requirement your first semester and get it out of the way. Often students are faced with classes that are needed for graduation, yet do not want to take them. This makes it important to get it finished sooner than later. More than likely you will not want to still be a senior years from now, in a class of freshmen students.
With any luck, you now have a better outlook on what college is like and how you can succeed in it. Use what works for you and learn from others. With dedication and a willingness to learn, your college experience should be a success one.
