Your HVAC is important, so it is advisable that you keep reading this great article for some insightful tips on how to keep it working properly.

TIP! Know what you need before you hire a contractor. It will be difficult for an HVAC contractor to provide you with an estimate on the phone without knowing what your current setup is.

Before calling someone to repair your system, make sure you know what kind of HVAC system you actually have. Learn the brand, model, and if you have it, the maintenance history. Then, you’ll be ready to tell the contractor what they need to know.

TIP! Clean the coils and blades in your condenser at the beginning of summer. Always make sure you shut off the power before you do any work on the unit other than superficial cleaning.

Clean the condenser coils and fan at the beginning of the year to help the unit run efficiently. Always shut off all power to your unit for any work beyond superficial cleaning. Also, make sure you remove any debris or leaves from the condenser unit outside.

Be sure to regularly clean debris from external condenser units. Debris can pile up after a storm, bringing potential damage with it. It can cause the unit to overheat and break down.

TIP! Look for shade when placing a compressor outdoors. The cooler the air which goes in, the less work the unit will have to do.

The coils and blades on the fans should be cleaned once a year. Before you get started, cut the power. Next, remove the grill, take the blades and clean them gently, then clean the actual unit.

TIP! Make a circuit around your home before calling for help with your HVAC. Note which rooms are hot and which are cold.

Most people are not fraught with knowledge when it comes to HVAC. However, most homes have an HVAC system and someone has to perform the maintenance and repairs. The information below can help you out of an HVAC jam. Keep reading for what you need to know.

TIP! By the end of spring, the fan blades and coils of your condenser should be thoroughly cleaned, so operation can proceed with greater efficiency. Before you do clean the coils and fan blades, always take the precaution of turning off all power to the unit.

Clean the fan blades and coils in your condenser each spring. First, turn the power off so nothing moves when you’re working with it. Next, pop off the grill, pull out the blades and start cleaning them and the unit itself off gently.

TIP! The HVAC unit in your home can become damaged from falling leaves. Make sure you clean out your fan grill often once nearby trees start shedding their leaves.

Be careful when doing yard work that you do not get debris on or in your unit. Try shooting the clippings away from it. This also applies to leaf blowing and any other yard work that results in debris.

TIP! A shady spot is always a good choice for the placement of your outdoor compressor. If you have a unit taking in air that’s cooler, it won’t have to work so hard to cool air that it sends to your home.

Lubricate your fan condenser if it has oil ports. These ports are typically covered with caps made of metal or rubber. Use a lightweight, detergent-free SAE 20 oil, putting 10 drops in each port.

TIP! A programmable thermostat can help you save money on your air conditioning bill. Programmable thermostats can reduce your power HVAC energy costs by as much as ten percent, just by dialing back your thermostat ten or fifteen percent up to eight daily hours.

In order to boost efficiency, place new outdoor units or move your current unit to a place which resides in the shade. When your unit sucks in cooler air, then much less is required to cool it further, which saves you money on energy bills.

TIP! Regularly having your HVAC system serviced can help keep your heating and cooling bills down. An HVAC specialist will inspect the entire system, including the oil, the motor, and the ducts.

Make sure you have your HVAC system checked at least twice a year. Your system should be inspected in Spring and Fall. Even though it may seem as nothing is wrong with the unit, a simple inspection can prove otherwise.

TIP! Sometimes, air conditioners collect ice. Sometimes the drain line will freeze, causing leaks.

If you can, use double-paned windows instead of single-paned ones. Windows that are double pane keep the cool air in and can greatly reduce the amount of time your air conditioner will need to run. Conversely, they keep warm air in during the winter.

Homeowners fear their HVAC system breaking down. Understanding them before you have a problem is ideal. These tips will help you get the job done right.
